Vila Praia de Áncora is a little fisher’s town, located in Caminha, in the north of Portugal. This little town counts with a long urban beach (the “Praia de Áncora” beach), with a beautiful promenade (approximately 1200m long).
Although Vila Praia de Áncora is a little town, it counts with all sort of services to the tourists interested in spending here a day. You will find not only restaurants and bars along the promenade but also surf schools and bicycle rental shops.
As known, all the beaches in the north of Portugal are very windy and because of that they are very visited by surfers. But if you like to ride a bike, the town counts with a bike lane along the promenade.
Following the bike lane, you will find an interesting place worth to visit: the “Fuerte de Lagarteira” (Fort of Lagarteira), a military fortress that you will find at the end of the promenade.
Fort of Lagarteira is a medieval fort constructed in the 15th century, to protect Portugal from the Spanish attacks. Located on the right margin of the Áncora River the views from the fort are incredible!
Along the promenade, you will find food trucks, a playground area for the children, and a tourism office where you can ask all the questions about the village, the beach of the fortress.
An interesting feature of this beach is that the Ancora River flows into the Atlantic exactly here, creating an area with calmy waters near the beach, that are ideal for the children to play without danger.
Definitively this beach is worth to visit, and is in the nearby from other interesting beaches, like the Spanish beach “Samil” in the town of Vigo.
